Este hallazgo, publicado en junio de 2026 en la revista Microbiology Spectrum, pone bajo la lupa a un microorganismo que, aunque fue descubierto inicialmente en China en 2014, sigue generando grandes interrogantes en la comunidad cient\u00edfica internacional debido a su biolog\u00eda y potencial impacto en la salud humana, el cual se sospecha podr\u00eda representar una amenaza a\u00fan no dimensionada. La detecci\u00f3n de este agente en espec\u00edmenes recolectados en el Caribe costarricense abre un nuevo cap\u00edtulo en la investigaci\u00f3n de enfermedades transmitidas por vectores en nuestra regi\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<h2>Un hallazgo liderado por la UCR y expertos internacionales<\/h2>\n<p>La investigaci\u00f3n fue liderada por la Dra. Tatiana Murillo Corrales, vir\u00f3loga de la Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR), en colaboraci\u00f3n con la Dra. Adriana Troyo, entom\u00f3loga m\u00e9dica y coordinadora del proyecto. El equipo recolect\u00f3 espec\u00edmenes de la garrapata Amblyomma mixtum \u2014una de las especies que m\u00e1s afecta al ser humano en la regi\u00f3n\u2014 en la localidad de La Siberia, en Valle la Estrella, Lim\u00f3n. Este estudio es pionero en Centroam\u00e9rica, ya que anteriormente los esfuerzos se hab\u00edan centrado en bacterias transmitidas por estos ar\u00e1cnidos, ignorando en gran medida qu\u00e9 virus podr\u00edan estar transportando. El trabajo interinstitucional cont\u00f3 con la participaci\u00f3n del Centro de Investigaci\u00f3n en Enfermedades Tropicales (CIET) de la UCR, la Universidad Nacional (UNA), el Instituto Conmemorativo Gorgas de Panam\u00e1 y el Instituto Pasteur de Francia.<\/p>\n<h2>\u00bfQu\u00e9 sabemos sobre este pat\u00f3geno y sus riesgos?<\/h2>\n<p>Desde su descubrimiento en 2014, el Jingmen tick virus se ha encontrado en diversos continentes durante la \u00faltima d\u00e9cada, incluyendo Asia, Europa, \u00c1frica y Am\u00e9rica. Estudios previos, como uno destacado en 2019 por The New England Journal of Medicine, sugieren que virus de este grupo pueden infectar a humanos, causando s\u00edntomas que van desde inflamaci\u00f3n en la piel (escara), fiebre, dolor de cabeza, malestar general e inflamaci\u00f3n de ganglios. Sin embargo, la Dra. Murillo aclara que a\u00fan no se sabe con certeza si la variante costarricense provoca los mismos cuadros cl\u00ednicos o si ya existen casos de enfermedad en el pa\u00eds. La variante identificada en suelo costarricense presenta particularidades gen\u00e9ticas propias, aunque mantiene un ancestro evolutivo con virus detectados en Am\u00e9rica Latina, el Caribe, Europa y Asia occidental. Este perfil gen\u00e9tico sugiere un origen diverso que conecta al pa\u00eds con detecciones globales, lo que obliga a la ciencia a estudiar este comportamiento con mayor detalle.<\/p>\n<h2>La importancia de la vigilancia proactiva<\/h2>\n<p>El Dr. Luis Enrique Chaves Gonz\u00e1lez, entom\u00f3logo m\u00e9dico de la UCR, enfatiz\u00f3 que \u00ablo que no se conoce, no se vigila, no se diagnostica y, por ende, no se trata\u00bb. Por esta raz\u00f3n, la detecci\u00f3n del virus es un paso crucial para mejorar las capacidades diagn\u00f3sticas y la respuesta ante posibles riesgos futuros. El equipo investigador subraya que, al ser un virus nuevo en la regi\u00f3n y perteneciente a una familia con antecedentes de causar enfermedades como el dengue, es indispensable profundizar los estudios para comprender su comportamiento exacto en suelo nacional.
