Si no se toman medidas urgentes, en 2050 los casos ascender\u00e1n a 26.400 y las muertes a 13.500. Es decir, en menos de tres d\u00e9cadas, tanto los diagn\u00f3sticos como los fallecimientos se habr\u00e1n duplicado. La advertencia la hizo el doctor Warner Alp\u00edzar Alp\u00edzar, investigador del Centro de Investigaci\u00f3n en Estructuras Microsc\u00f3picas (CIEMic) de la Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR), durante un conversatorio realizado en la Asamblea Legislativa.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;El c\u00e1ncer es cuesti\u00f3n de tiempo. Cuando la enfermedad comienza a desarrollarse, seguir\u00e1 su curso sin esperar citas m\u00e9dicas, ex\u00e1menes de laboratorio, limpiezas radiof\u00e1gicas, cirug\u00edas, radioterapia o quimioterapia. Las c\u00e9lulas m\u00e1s malignas no aguardar\u00e1n la fecha del procedimiento&#8221;, advirti\u00f3 Alp\u00edzar. Un estudio publicado en el <em>British Medical Journal<\/em> y citado por Alp\u00edzar se\u00f1ala que un retraso de cuatro semanas en el tratamiento curativo del c\u00e1ncer est\u00e1 asociado con un aumento de entre 8% y 12% en la mortalidad, para m\u00faltiples tipos de c\u00e1ncer y modalidades de tratamiento. Tambi\u00e9n cuesta dinero. Un estudio publicado en 2021 sobre costos del c\u00e1ncer de mama en Am\u00e9rica Latina y el Caribe revel\u00f3 que el gasto m\u00e9dico directo por paciente-a\u00f1o se incrementa significativamente seg\u00fan el estadio de la enfermedad. Y la p\u00e9rdida de productividad por muerte por c\u00e1ncer alcanz\u00f3 los $149.031 por pa\u00eds en 2022, la cifra m\u00e1s alta de la regi\u00f3n, seg\u00fan la AIRC. Una encuesta aplicada a usuarias de los servicios de salud de la CCSS en 2025 revel\u00f3 que el 25% esper\u00f3 m\u00e1s de un a\u00f1o para una mamograf\u00eda, el 70% aguard\u00f3 m\u00e1s de un a\u00f1o para recibir una respuesta y el 17% esper\u00f3 un a\u00f1o o m\u00e1s para obtener resultados. En Costa Rica, la incidencia de este tipo de c\u00e1ncer aument\u00f3 un 85% entre 2000 y 2019, mientras que la mortalidad creci\u00f3 un 82% en el mismo per\u00edodo. Un 6,3% de los casos no se indica estadio.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>La norma existe, pero no se cumple<\/h2>\n<p>Costa Rica cuenta desde hace a\u00f1os con una norma nacional para la atenci\u00f3n integral del c\u00e1ncer de mama (Decreto Ejecutivo 44771-S), que establece tiempos m\u00e1ximos aceptables y tiempos \u00f3ptimos para los diferentes procesos de atenci\u00f3n. Pa\u00edses de la Organizaci\u00f3n para la Cooperaci\u00f3n y el Desarrollo Econ\u00f3micos (OCDE) establecen que no deber\u00edan pasar m\u00e1s de ocho semanas desde que se descubren los primeros s\u00edntomas para dar inicio al tratamiento. Costa Rica no tiene ese tipo de disposiciones y, en la pr\u00e1ctica, pueden pasar muchos meses.<\/p>\n<h2>Una diputada sobreviviente y su llamado<\/h2>\n<p>La diputada \u00c1ngela Aguilar, del Partido Liberaci\u00f3n Nacional, comparti\u00f3 su experiencia personal durante el conversatorio. &#8220;Muchas de las que estamos aqu\u00ed somos sobrevivientes. Yo estoy aqu\u00ed porque me detectaron un c\u00e1ncer a tiempo y eso permiti\u00f3 que se tratara a tiempo. Pero hay personas a las que no se les detecta a tiempo&#8221;, afirm\u00f3. La legisladora advirti\u00f3 que el c\u00e1ncer de mama tambi\u00e9n afecta a los hombres y que los casos van en aumento.<\/p>\n<p>Aguilar critic\u00f3 la contradicci\u00f3n de postergar la salud mientras se invierte en bienes materiales. &#8220;Si un carro se da\u00f1a, r\u00e1pidamente se busca el dinero para arreglarlo. Pero siempre postergamos la salud. Tenemos que educarnos a que no lo podemos postergar. No hay cosa m\u00e1s valiosa que la salud&#8221;, concluy\u00f3.<\/p>\n<h2>El desaf\u00edo: diagn\u00f3stico temprano y tratamiento oportuno<\/h2>\n<p>El llamado de Alp\u00edzar es claro: no basta con diagnosticar temprano si el paciente no recibe tratamiento oportuno. &#8220;Si diagnosticamos temprano pero el tiempo transcurre y las mujeres no llegan a tratamiento, es una p\u00e9rdida de recurso el haber diagnosticado, porque no se va a traducir en una mayor supervivencia y calidad de vida&#8221;, advirti\u00f3.<\/p>\n<p>La investigadora Marcela Campos, sobreviviente de c\u00e1ncer de mama y presidenta de la Asociaci\u00f3n de Pacientes, coincidi\u00f3 en que el pa\u00eds ha hecho esfuerzos valiosos pero no articulados. &#8220;No hay como pol\u00edtica articulada en relaci\u00f3n con el tamizaje. Temas como la regionalizaci\u00f3n podr\u00edan trabajarse con las mismas capacidades, optimizando un poco y haciendo un poco de orden en los procesos&#8221;, se\u00f1al\u00f3.<\/p>\n<p>El <strong>c\u00e1ncer<\/strong> es, como resume Alp\u00edzar, un problema de tiempo.
